چکیده

The discovery of microbial metabolites—macrotetrolides, siderochromes and boromycin—is reviewed. The structures of these and related compounds provide instructuve examples of how Nature has solved the problem of cornplexing certain rarer elements, such as potassium, iron and boron. The common structural features of these highly specific, natural complexing agents are briefly discussed. It was emphasized by Academician M. M. Shemyakin in his opening lecture' and it was confirmed explicitly or implicitly by all following plenary lecturers that the chemistry of natural compounds has changed considerably in the 'sixties from descriptive natural history of individual compounds towards a bioorganic chemistry that overlaps with biochemistry and molecular biology. We believe today that in the structure of natural compounds we find wisdom collected by living matter during several hundred millions of years. Natural compounds are the result of hundreds of millions of years of chemical experimentation of living organisms controlled by evolution and perhaps other hitherto undiscovered factors. In spite of the great progress in understanding biological phenomena on a molecular basis, we still do not know most of the essential structural details of natural biological tools. We can therefore still learn a great deal by investigating natural compounds. By doing so we shall not perhaps reach the level of the supreme wisdom, but the results can serve as a useful starting point in the terrifying multidimensional space of research possibilities in biological sciences. One fascinating research subject in this respect is the study of the specific cornplexing agents by which organisms concentrate within their bodies elements that are essential for life but occur in Nature either accompanied by a large excess of similar elements (e.g. potassium), or are widely spread but in low concentrations (e g. boron, cobalt, copper, iron, molybdenum, zinc etc). In what form do organisms bring these elements in the right concentrations at the right time to the right place, i.e. to the interior of the cell or its subunits, where they are needed? I would like to illustrate this question by a few examples found by investigating microbial metabolites by a research

Recent developments in Pseudomonas biocontrol mechanisms

Fluorescent pseudomonads are an effective source of biological control that have high adaptive power and able to produce a wonderful source of secondary metabolites. Antibiotics such as phenazines, diacetylphloroglucinol, and hydrogen cyanide are produced by certain taxonomic groups of the genus Pseudomonas and appear to be ancestral. These compounds often play a physiological role in the produ...

A Rigorous Calculation Method for Determining Potential-pH Diagrams Part I: Copper in Aqueous Solutions of Various Complexing Agents

The main aim of this research is to determine optimal leaching conditions; Eh, pH and complexing agent concentrations, for recovery of Copper from hydroxide sludges such as those produced by electroplating shops, metal finishers, treatment of acid mine drainage, and industrial wastewater in general. This has been preceded by a theoretical approach and numerical and computer calculation. Pot...

The Effect of Intestinal Microbiota Metabolites on HT29 Cell line by Using MTT Method in Patients with Colorectal Cancer

Background: Colorectal cancer is one of the most common malignant tumors, Human guts harbor abundant microbes that adjust many aspects of host physiology.  Increasing studies show that gut microbiota plays a significant role in the incidence and expansion of CRC, as a result of virulence factors, bacterial metabolites, or inflammatory pathways. Materials and Methods: In this study, viability o...

مروری بر نقش عوامل میکروبی در پسوریازیس

Background and purpose: Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease characterized by lesions covered with silvery-white scabs of dead skin. This autoimmune disease occurs when the immune system sends out faulty signals that speed up the growth cycle of skin cells. Prevalence of psoriasis in world populations is about 0.5-4% depending on the regions. People with psoriasis have an increased ...

Release of weak and strong copper-complexing agents by algae1

By means of potentiometric titrations, the copper-complcxing properties of organic compounds released by 21 algal species are characterized. Most eucaryotic species relcascd measurablc amounts (lo-” M) of copper-complexing agents that could be modeled as weak organic acids with log{*&.,,,} = 0.5. Of seven blue-green algal species studied, four produced about 5 x lo+ M concentrations of strong c...
